WHAT IS A JAPAN "MINI/REPLICA-LP-SLEEVE" CD?

Have you ever lamented the loss of one of the 20th Century's great art forms, the 12" vinyl LP jacket? Then "mini-LP-sleeve" CD's may be for you.

Mini-sleeve CDs are manufactured in Japan under license. The disc is packaged inside a 135MM X 135MM cardboard precision-miniature replica of the original classic vinyl-LP album. Also, anything contained in the original LP, such as gatefolds, booklets, lyric sheets, posters, printed LP sleeves, stickers, embosses, special LP cover paper/inks/textures and/or die cuts, are precisely replicated and included. An English-language lyric sheet is always included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics.

Then, there's the sonic quality: Mini-sleeves have dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2/K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. There also may be bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere.

Each Japan mini-sleeve has an "obi" ("oh-bee"), a removable Japan-language promotional strip. The obi lists the Japan street date of that particular release, the catalog number, the mastering info, and often the original album's release date. Bonus tracks are only listed on the obi, maintaining the integrity of the original LP artwork. The obi's are collectable, and should not be discarded.

All mini-sleeve releases are tremendously limited editions mainly pressed on future orders only and once released immediately out of print. This fact along with other latter features we've mentioned make these titles rare collectibles that sell in the collectors markets for $100's of dollars apiece.

THE BAND - MUSIC FROM THE BIG PINK stands as one of those rare albums that turned the rock world on its axis. On this record, released in 1968 at the height of the psychedelic revolution, the five members of the Band (along with producer-sideman John Simon) eschewed spacey diversions, opting for an earthier route. Soon enough, wah-wah pedals and tape loops were making way for fiddles and mandolins.

The group's most democratic effort (ROBBIE ROBERTSON) would soon emerge as the ensemble's mouthpiece), the debut's 11 songs come from Robertson, bassist RICK DANKO and pianist Richard Manuel, who contributes two songs and co-wrote the doleful opener, "Tears of Rage," with BOB DYLAN Manuel's role would diminish from this point hence and the balance he brought to the quintet would be missed.

Many would argue that Big Pink's sequel, THE BAND, represents their crowning achievement. The truth is, BIG PINK is the purest distillation of the Band, and their preeminent recording.

-CAHOOTS Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve and includes five bonus tracks. - Here's where the Band stumbled. This 1971 lapse followed two consensus classics MUSIC FROM THE BIG PINK and THE BAND and the dicier but still worthy STAGE FRIGHT. Consequently, expectations were high. But, despite moments of excellence ("Life Is a Carnival," "When I Paint My Masterpiece," their first DYLAN cover since their debut), primary songwriter ROBBIE ROBERTSON repeatedly comes up short. "Last of the Blacksmiths," "Where Do We Go from Here," and "River Hymn" are overwrought attempts to recapture the unaffected longing for the past that marked the first two albums, while the likes of "Smoke Signal" and "Volcano" are merely forgettable. Still, VAN MORRISON' Srambunctious duet with Richard Manuel on "4% Pantomime" and the weird "Moon Struck One" help make Cahoots a worthwhile curio for those interested in digging deep into the Band songbook. The remastered reissue includes four quality bonus songs as well as a vintage radio spot

THE BAND STAGE FRIGHT is The Band's third studio album is also their third-best studio album, and that isn't bad. It's not as synchronous as FROM THE BIG PINK or as overpowering as THE BAND but that's part of its appeal. The quintet's first two albums were such towering achievements that the group came to lean on those songs, turning the lion's share of them into concert staples.

STAGE FRIGHT is littered with lesser-known ROBBIE ROBERTSON compositions possessing more modest charms than the overplayed likes of "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." The title track is uncommonly hard-eyed and modern; Richard Manual's vocal is sparkling. (Manual also shines on the reflective "Sleeping" and the up tempo "Just Another Whistle Stop"). "All La Glory" is a gorgeous lullaby, while "Time to Kill" sounds like the Band doing CCR.

Limited Edition THE BAND SELF- TITLED Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve and includes seven bonus tracks.

Popularly known as the "Brown Album," this is the collection people first think of when this august outfit's name is mentioned. The four-parts Canadian, one-part Arkansan quintet's sophomore effort boasts more soon-to-be-staples than any other Band studio recording, what with the likes of the BAEZ hit "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "Across the Great Divide," and "Up on Cripple Creek" standing out among the dozen uniformly memorable tracks. Lesser-known group originals such as the achingly lovely "Whispering Pines" and the cryptic "Unfaithful Servant," however, play crucial roles in giving this 1969 classic its unique flavor. Given the high standard established by The Band and its better-still 1968 predecessor, MUSIC FROM THE BIG PINK it's not surprising the Band peaked early as a recording group.

Tracks include:

1. Across The Great Divide

2. Rag Mama Rag

3. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Limited Edition NORTHERN LIGHTS SOUTHERN CROSS Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve and includes two bonus tracks - features the same dense, muscular arrangements as previous albums, anchored by Levon Helm's supple, versatile drumming, and the role of lead vocalist is still passed around between Helm, Danko, and Manuel. The only notable difference is that Garth Hudson had partially abandoned his Lowrey organ in favor of synthesizers (that may sound ominous, but it really isn't).

Robbie Robertson is credited as the sole composer on all eight tracks on the original LP, as well as the newly added bonus cuts, and the many highlights include the rollicking "Ophelia", Rick Danko's excellent performance of the mournful ballad "It Makes No Difference", and the lyrical, acoustic folk-rock of "Hobo Jungle".

But the album's centerpiece has to be the epic "Acadian Driftwood", a nearly seven minute folkish narrative which chronicles the story of the Acadians, a people exiled from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the 1750s. It is a superbly evocative masterpiece, one of Robbie Robertson's very best songs.

Not as highly touted as MUSIC FROM THE BIG PINK or THE BAND, NORTHERN LIGHTS, SOUTHERN CROSS is nevertheless one of The Band's classic albums.

THE BAND - MOONDOG MATINEE -  Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve and includes six bonus tracks and a poster! - By 1973, the Band were at a crossroads. Having summed up the first phase of their recording career with the ROCKOF AGES concert recording, ROBBIE ROBERTSON flirted with an ambitious project inspired by Polish composer Krzystof Penderecki. But instead of forging ahead into uncharted territory, the quintet opted to hearken back to their roadhouse days with an LP that renovated oldies associated with the likes of CLARENCE FROGMAN HENRY  the PLATTERS and  FATS DIMINO Given that Robertson's originals were no longer coming as fast and true as in the late '60s, a covers collection was a wise move. After all, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel were all vocalists who could tackle classics from the canons of CHUCK BERRY ("The Promised Land"), BOBBY BLUE BLAND("Share Your Love"), and SAM COOKE ("A Change Is Gonna Come") without straining under the weight of the originals.

Limited Edition ISLANDS Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve and includes two bonus tracks.  The liner notes for ROBBIE ROBERTSON version of the Band's swan song makes the case that Islands was never meant to be viewed as their studio signoff. Rather, argues Robertson, it was seen as their version of the Who's ODDS & SODS and a contract fulfiller so that the quintet could release their true coda,  THE LAST WALT Zon Warner Bros. With such modest aspirations in mind, Islands, while falling far short of the Band's creative heights, provides a pleasant listen for stalwart fans. Covers of "Ain't That a Lot of Love" and "Georgia on My Mind" (the latter recorded to boost Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign) showcase the always striking vocals of LEVON HELM and Richard Manuel, respectively. And while the likes of "The Saga of Pepote Rouge," "Knockin' Lost John," and "Let the Night Fall" lack the passion and precision of prime Band, they're appealing in their own modest way

THE BAND - ROCK OF AGES - 2 CD Set - Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve and includes 10 bonus tracks.  the 1972 live album is a watershed recording for the Band. Recorded the previous New Year's Eve, the two-disc concert recording presents the core quintet fortified by a five-man horn section overseen by New Orleans ace ALLEN TOUSSAINT and it is capped by a guest appearance by BOB DYLAN. The brass and reed players incite the group to gut it out with more unrestraine  fire than these road-hardened vets were accustomed to. The lion's share of the set selections are culled from the quintet's first four studio albums; only an ebullient cover of the MARVIN GAYE hit "Don't Do It," the original "Get Up Jake," Garth Hudson's mind-boggling organ improvisation "The Genetic Method," and an absolutely piercing version of  CHUCK WILLIS "Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes" spice up the reliable album selections on disc one.

But LEVON HELM, RICK DANKO and Richard Manuel sound like they're having so much fun singing the likes of "King Harvest," "Stage Fright," "Caledonia Mission," and "Chest Fever" that it matters not that ROBBIE ROBERTSON writing muse had already pretty much dried up. The 2001 digitally remastered reissue includes an entire second disc of previously unreleased tracks, including four with Dylan.

More than four years would pass before the Robertson version of the Band would call it a day following its star-studded LAST WALTZ but, as a live entity, here is where they crested
