USS WOONSOCKET PF-32 USN Patrol Frigate naval first day cover postmarked

This 303 foot Tacoma Class patrol frigate served in World War II with a US Coast

Guard crew of 190 men. Cover franked with a 49 cent American Flag stamp. 

Commissioned on 1 September 1944, this vessel served as a North Atlantic weather

station ship off Newfoundland, until decommissioned 16 March 1946. Later, she

was transferred to the US Coast Guard until 18 September 1946, and to the

Navy of Peru from 1948 to 1961.
