Fun Facts About Japanese Keishi: Keshi is a term derived from the Japanese word for“poppy seed.” This was traditionally used to describe small seed-sized pearls found as by-products of the Japanese Akoya culturing process. These seawater pearls are formed when irritants make their way inside the oyster and nacre is laid down to protect the oyster from foreign objects. Japanese Akoya Keshi pearls are rare. True Japanese Keshi pearls are from the Japanese Akoya Oyster found only in the Sea of Japan. True Keshi represent less than 0.5% of all annual Akoya production. Japanese Akoya Keshi, which are formed naturally, come in many shapes, hues, luster, colors and sizes.
