From the Tibetan Nuns Project web-site (tnp.org):

"These are a favorite of ours here at The Tibetan Nuns Project.  Both the Monk & Nun Dolls are handmade by the nuns so each has their own unique personality! The Dolls’ robes are made from recycled nuns’ robes and are equipped with their own mini-malas. Each measures approximately 10 inches tall and 4 inches wide with an open arm span of approximately 8 inches. Not recommended for children under 5 years of age".

The Monk or Lama is wearing the yellow hat of the Geluk tradition, one of 4 main "lineages" in Tibetan Buddhism.  Made from felt, the hat is bright yellow accented with burgundy trim around the bottom.  The top of the hat is tall and curves forward, just like the real deal!!  The 4 are Nyimgmapa, Kagyu, Sakyapa and Gelugpa.  More alike than different, the 4 lineages are sort of like "main category - Protestant, examples of sub-categories Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, etc.  Our Monk's robes are called:  1) Duga (the upper shirt), 2) Sen (the upper robe/shawl) and 3) Shamtap (the lower robe).   Our Monk is tightly stuffed with cotton.  In the picture on the center left, below,  I have pushed his upper robe aside to that you can see his shirt, which is a brilliant saffron color with royal blue adorning the ends of the sleeves.  His upper robe is tacked down but can be adjusted somewhat.  The picture on the right shows a belt that is usually not seen.  I moved his robes aside and you can see the traditional fastening, as well as his wooden mala with one larger faceted bead!!  I found his green and red felt boots, below left, irrestistable!!

I enjoy  selling the things the nuns make, partly because they are always beautifully made and also because I like their sense of self-sufficienty!  I carry three of their malas, Carnelian, Tiger Eye and Malachite, coloful cotton mala bags, very strongly made shopping bags (save a tree, even a plastic tree!) and some beautiful Green Tara prayer flags:  please visit my Store

*** There is perhaps no simpler way to create good merit in this troubled world of ours than to put prayer flags up for the benefit of other living beings. Prayer flags are not just pretty pieces of colored cloth with funny writing on them. The ancient Buddhist prayers, mantras and powerful symbols displayed on them produce a spiritual vibration that is activated and carried by the wind across the countryside. All beings that are touched by the wind are uplifted and a little happier. The silent prayers are blessings spoken on the breath of nature. Just as a drop of water can permeate the ocean, prayers dissolved in the wind extend to fill all of space.
