[RUDOLF ERICH RASPE]
LONDON [i.e. GÖTTINGEN]: N. P. 1788 [published date: 1788]. Rare Second
enlarged Edition. 8vo. 7" x 4.25" inches (LxB). Pp. 176 pages
including Half Title + with 14 engraved plates. The 1st was published in
1786 with 114 pages with only 6 plates. A rare book bound in the
original blue grey paper boards. Baron Munchausen's narrative of his
marvelous travels, with charming illustrations to the fanciful tales.
Translated by Gottfried August Bürger. Rare. Raspe's text was introduced to
the German public in a translation with a preface by the poet Burger. It
appeared in 1786 under the title: Wunderbare Reisen zu Wasser undzu Lande,
Feldziige und lustige Abentheuer des Freyherrn von Munchhausen. This
enlarged (second) German edition appeared in 1788, (176 pages). These books,
however, were not published in London, as one would gather from the title
page, but in Gottingen by Johann Christian Dietrich, whose friend, Gottfried
August Burger, was the editor. Although Burger had not signed his name to
the preface of the German work, he passed for the writer of the same. The
first who called attention to Burger's authorship was his physician and
biographer, L. C. Althoff, and then the editor of Burger's works, Karl von
Reinhard. From a letter from Burger himself to his publisher, April 3rd,
1791 (see Westermanris Monatshefte, May 1872), we know that Burger was the
author of the German Munchhausen. He is more than a mere translator,
however. In his preface to the German edition he admits that he had used
Raspe's work rather freely, making additions and changes wherever he found
it convenient and suitable to his taste. In fact, one third of the entire
book is his own work as is also the form in which it was cast. In spite of
the unfavorable criticism it received upon its appearance, especially on
account of its satire directed, as some critics believed, against Baron
Gerlach Adolph von Munchhausen (1688-1770), the meritorious curator of the
University of Gottingen, the work became immensely popular. That it became a
genuine Volksbuch, that can rival in popularity with Don Quixote and
Eulenspiegel, is wholly Burger's merit. The language is especially rich in
racy and popular expressions. The fact that Kastner and Lichtenberg,
especially the latter, are sometimes mentioned by critics as having in some
way assisted Burger in the production of his Munchhausen cannot in any way
detract from Burger's fame, especially in as much as the assistance possibly
rendered, consisted merely in a few suggestions.. A classic
work. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below;
