Antique Victorian Solid Silver Propelling Pencil (Wilmot & Co, c1890)
Description
Antique late Victorian solid sterling silver
propelling pencil. Square shaped body with fluted edges & beautiful bright cut hand chased foliate decoration around the outside. A raised plain band at the bottom & a removable screw top end with foliate decoration & an inset milky jade gemstone cap in the end. Inside the top end is a small compartment to store
spare leads. A plain centre sliding band in the middle that extends & retracts the
pencil tip. The propelling pencil has a twist action tip which extends & retracts
the pencil lead mechanism. Both the mechanisms are in excellent working order. Stamped with the makers mark at the top end of the pencil. As is very often the case with these small items of silver from this period & of this design it is not hallmarked but has been acid tested to confirm solid sterling silver. You will notice that the nozzle of this pencil has a split in the end, this is on both sides & I can guarantee that this is how the pencil was made & not a damage split. I have had quite a few Wilmot & Co pencils over the years & this has been a feature of all them that I have had. lovely collectors item.
