For sale is a beautiful 112 year old (1894) Martin Acoustic Guitar in remarkable preserved condition. This is a model 0-28 Herringbone trim guitar that was made in the historic Martin New York factory and preserved in extremely good playing and structural condition. I have no idea how many of these still survive but I would guess that few remain in this original and playable condition. This guitar has been played a lot over the last century judging by the honest play wear on the top where a pick guard would be on later guitars but has certainly not been abused and has been very well cared for. The only things on this guitar that I believe to be not original are the strings, some of the bridge pins, 1 reproduction bone tuning button and the bridge saddle as near as I can tell. The bridge may very well be the original but has the diamonds that usually appear on the ends sanded off. There is only 1 very small crack approximately 3 3/4" long that comes off the bottom on the top of the guitar. This crack is a minor one because it does not run up to the bridge and is closed perfectly and neat. My guy put 1 small cleat on the inside for insurance. Most guitars of this period were of the solid peg head variety with friction tuners but this one is the slot head with beautiful old world engraved brass machine tuners and bone buttons. The button for the B string tuner was missing and I had a reproduction one made for it. The tuners work very smoothly and are very ornate to look at. The original bar frets have much life left in them and only minor fingerboard divits in the first 2 positions. The bridge is the correct size and old but as I said, I suspect it to be a replacement because I would expect to see the pyramids carved on the ends. The neck width at the nut is 1 7/8". A V shaped Cedar neck, 12 frets to the body. Adirondack Spruce top, Brazilian Rosewood back, sides, PH overlay, Ebony Finger board and bridge. Finish is remarkable on this guitar considering all the tunes played on it. The finish is the original varnish with no touch up or overspray anywhere and worn only in the area where a pick guard would be but other than that, there is scarcely any signs of wear. The back has scarcely any buckle rash, the sides are also very clean. The inside is nice and clean and original including the bridge plate. Action is very good with a fresh pro neck set that has only 3/32" clearance between the E 6th string and fret at the 12th fret. No buzzes or rattles. And lastly, the guitar just sounds like your ringing a bell, so clear and well defined tones all across and plenty volume with light gauge Silk and Steel strings. She really is a sweetie to play and hear besides being a piece of guitar history. I honestly can't imagine many being out there that are preserved this well. Does not have it's original case, only a generic soft case. It is offered for sale else where as well.
