1786 Desnos and de la Tour Map of Southern Italy (Naples and Sicily) Title: Du Roi Des Deux Siciles avec les Metropoles Ecclesiastiques. Description: This is a lovely 1786 Desnos and Brion de la Tour map of southern Italy. It covers the territories claimed by the Kingdom of Naples, which extended from the Papal States south to include all of Sicily. The map renders the entire region in extraordinary detail offering both topographical and political information. his map predates the Italian solidarity movement, when the Kingdom of Naples was the richest and largest Italian state. Shortly after this map was issued Napoleon and the French Directorate would invade Italy, replacing the Napoli King, Ferdinand IV, with the short lived Parthenopaean Republic. Later Napoleon established the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. A beautifully engraved title cartouche adorns the top right quadrant of the map. To the left and right of the map are paste downs of French text with remarks and description of the map. Surrounding the whole is an elaborate decorative border featuring floral arrangements, surveying tools, elaborate baroque scalloping, and a winged globe. This map was issued as plate no. 20 in the most deluxe edition of Desnos’ 1786 Atlas General Methodique et Elementaire, Pour l’Etude de la Geographie et de l’Histoire Moderne . Size: Printed area measures 15 inches high by 21.5 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Minor toning along original centerfold. Minor spotting at places. Original platemark visible.
