FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE CONTINENTAL US! This is a stunning LARGE portrait of a woman carrying a basket of flowers. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right by well listed artist/illustrator Eric Pape (1870-1938) and dated what looks like 1937. The woman appears to be seated, holding the basket of flowers with one hand and resting her other hand on her lap. From the expression on her face, you can almost imagine that she has just spotted the person for whom she has brought the flowers. She is clearly happy to see them. You can see the kindness in her eyes. Maybe it's an old friend, or a lover. Her colorful coat/shawl and light colored scarf can only lead you to one thing: her beautiful face. She is absolutely captivating.

The painting measures 33 3/4" x 28" and is displayed in an ornate Italian gilt wood frame measuring 38 3/4" x 32 1/4". This painting is from the artist's estate and is stamped as such on verso. The painting appears to be in very good condition, with no tears or crackling. I can't tell if there has been any restoration work done to it, or if it was just very well cared for. And the frame complements the painting beautifully.  Please note, the white board on the back is just a protective backing. I have left it in place as that is where it has been marked with the estate stamp.

Frederic L. Pape, known as Eric Pape, was an American painter, engraver, sculptor, and illustrator. He had an illustrious career having studied, traveled, and exhibited all over the world. He established the Eric Pape School of Art in New York City in 1898, where one of its students was N. C. Wyeth. His list of accomplishments, which includes providing illustrations for Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is too long for me to include in the description of this painting, but is very interesting and you may want to look him up on your own.
