Prior to adopting various East German "rain" type patterns, each Warsaw Pact country had its own distinctive camouflage. None was more unique than the Czech "clown" camo of the early 1960s, which was widely exported to Czech military clients in the Middle East and Africa. Its most notable uses were by PAIGC guerrillas in Portuguese Guinea, and Christian Phalange militiamen in Beirut. The Portuguese commander in Guinea, General Antonio de Espinola, once referred to it as "that clown suit", and the name stuck. This Czech 1960s MLOK SALAMANDER CLOWN CAMO COMBAT JACKET is in excellent condition, with two small tears in the right edge of the collar, some scattered brownish spot soiling along the interior lower right back, the number "93" hand marked in red at the interior upper right front, some scattered wrinkling and surface nicking throughout, and with some light scattered age wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the jacket is in near mint shape, with absolutely no rips, holes, tears, or other damage to the crisp 100% cotton construction. Most interestingly, it retains nearly 100% of the striking Czech "clown" camouflage colors, sports all of the original green plastic buttons throughout, and is dated "61" (1961) in the Czech military stamping at the interior lower right front. It's marked a Size "1B" (Medium), boasts sewn elbow patches, and features button closure lower front pockets.
