In four short years, the US Army Air Forces grew from a small air service to a mighty armada that swept the Luftwaffe from the skies, and was capable of projecting power on a global scale. The need to train thousands of airmen in such a short period required large centralized training bases. The AAF Atlantic City Training Center opened in January 1942, and administered a 6 week course that included marching and formation drill, rifle qualification, and a week of intense physical training. Recruits were required to purchase a physical training "PT" T-shirt from the base PX, and these were emblazoned with the location of the training center and the classic "winged star" insignia of the AAF. This US Army AAF WW2 ATLANTIC CITY NEW JERSEY BASE PX PHYSICAL TRAINING T-SHIRT is in excellent condition, with some grayish fading and scattered surface cracking to the design at the middle chest, some excess seam stitching at the front right underarm, some uneven sewing to the hem, and with a pinhole evident in the back right hem (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the T-shirt is in excellent shape, with no other damage to the crisp, "paper thin" white 100% cotton construction. Most interestingly, it bears the classic "winged star" insignia of the AAF flock printed in blue at the middle chest, with "US AIR FORCE" above, and "ATLANTIC CITY, N.J." below. There is no size marked on the T-shirt, but it measures 15.5" from underarm to underarm across the chest. It sports a wide "boat neck" and short "quarter length" sleeves, features sewn holes at each side of the hem for a "clothes stop" (a cord to attach to a clothesline for drying), and was crafted in the traditional loop-wheel (no side seams) style. A beautiful example of a very rare, original US Army AAF WW2 ATLANTIC CITY NEW JERSEY BASE PX PHYSICAL TRAINING T-SHIRT. Now celebrating over 15 years on eBay.
