Seller ID: bridport37 Such wares were exported from Jiangxi, China to South East Asia in the 19th Century/early 20thC for use by the affluent Straits Chinese communities in Penang, Malacca, Singapore and parts of the Indonesian Archipelago. The design motif was customised to suit the taste of the Straits Chinese and typically features phoenix among rockery and peony blooms. These are auspicious symbols of prosperity and good fortune, highly regarded by the Peranakans and also widely represented on their beadwork and embroidery. Pair of scalloped rim white ground tea cups, neatly decorated in the famille rose palette with the free-form phoenix and peony pattern. Marked in Chinese on the reverse of bowl : 汪生肃造 (Wang Sheng Su Zao). Size : 3-7/8" dia. x 2-1/16" ht. (d 9.8 cm x h 5.5 cm). Circa: late 19th/early 20th Century. Condition: Good, enamels well preserved. Some tiny rim frits observed. A hard-to-detect hairline observed (illustrated) and some spots of enamel losses noted on the same cup A (illustrated). Elsewhere, there are no other issues. The other cup B has no cracks or hairline. Typical of used utilitarian porcelain, some degree of enamel wear and glaze imperfection may be present, so please view the pics to evaluate.
