The following information is for general guidance only:

Dusts are created when solid materials are broken down into fine particles.

The smaller the dust, the greater the hazard.

Mists are tiny droplets that are formed from liquid materials by atomisation and condensation processes such as spraying.

Fumes are created when solid materials are vaporised under high heat. The vapour is cooled quickly and condenses into extremely fine particles.

Dusts, mists and fumes are filtered out using a sieve.

Examples of Use

P1 or FFP1

Only against solid particulates of non toxic substances

Wood sanding, coarse dusts, pollen, polishing, brick dust

P2 S or FFP2 S

Only against solid particulates of fine toxic dusts, water based mists and fumes

Wood dust, coarse dusts, brick dust, cement, lead, glass fibres and plastic (non PVC)

P2 SL or FFP2 SL D

As FFP2 S but with additional protection against non water based mists e.g. oil mists

P3 S or FFP3 S D

All dusts, water based mists and fumes

Chemical industry, bacteria, viruses, biochemical dusts, light radioactive dust, toxic metals

P3 SL or FFP3 SL D

As FFP3 S but with additional protection against all kinds of liquid aerosols

Gases and vapours consist of molecules, which are so small that they penetrate a particulate filter. In these cases a chemical filter should be used.

Gases and vapours are filtered out using sponge.
