Shitajikis (also known as Pencil Boards) are normally made of plastic about 1mm to 2 mm in thickness and used to place under the top sheet of writing paper or notepad so your writings do not mark any sheets below. Also gives the top sheet something stiffer to write on. These items were aimed for people who did lots of writing in Japan. Some people collect them as posters and cards.

They are unique mainly to Japan and have become a popular collector's item with lots of anime collectors, due to them being easy to collect and nice in design. Some range from a few dollars to hundreds of dollars. In the end, the designs on the shitajiki itself is what draws the collectors to them.
