AUTHOR: Phair, Charles

TITLE: Atlantic Salmon Fishing

PUBLICATION: New York, The Derrydale Press, 1937. 1st Edition.

DESCRIPTION: First Edition. Limited Edition of 950 copies. INSCRIBED by the author " To Joseph B. Schlatman,  Good luck and tight lines, Charles Phair."

Illustrated with six tissue guarded color plates from watercolor paintings by Ogden M. Pleissner. With numerous black and white photos and line drawings by Robert Nisbet. Also bound in is an unopened four leaf map, The Atlantic Salmon Rivers of America.

193 pp. Oversize 9.75 x 12 inches. Bound in the original green cloth hardcovers with gilt titles to spine and cover with a detailed gilt border depicting two men in a canoe, one casting. Top edge gilt. Index, of which the last two pages are untrimmed. Green cloth covers have scuffing, light staining to the rear, mild staining to the front cover from a liquid. This can only be seen in a certain light. There is also a faint ring from a small glass, also only seen in a certain light. (I have tried to photograph it to highlight the stains. In my opinion, the stains are not this viible in ordinary light.) Spine cloth and gilt titles are slightly dulled. Mild fraying to bottom of spine. No marks or writing other than the author's inscription.

Chapters titled:  The Fish, Fishing the wet fly; Fishing the dry fly; Guide selection;  Tackle;  Salmon Water: Casting; Flies and their uses; Greased line fishing; Weather; A Month's Salmon Fishing trip; Life History; Salmon Fly Dressing; Improving, protecting, and stocking Salmon Rivers, together with the etiquette and customs; The Atlantic Salmon Rivers of America.

"One of the most knowledgeable of all anglers to fish salmon in North America is the author of this book Charles Phair. Phair spent most of his adult life stalking the salmon waters of Canada, learning the stretches rapids and pools of many rivers from resident guides. After years of study and experimenting with varieties of rods, lines, and flies he became a much sought-after guide himself. The result of all these years of accumulated knowledge and hours spent on the water are in this book."

This classic work is still considered the best book on Atlantic salmon fishing ever published."   One of the most popular and avidly sought Derrydales, designed by Eugene V. Connett, the founder of The Derrydale Press.
