Scars are a wound-healing response to skin damage. Scar tissue is made from tough fibrous tissue, and does not contain hair follicles, or sweat glands. Scars vary in type and severity. Some examples are hypertrophic and keloid scars. Hypertrophic scars are usually a raised red area that stays within the confines of the original wound, and often improves over time. Keloid scars can continue to grow and are marked by a thick growth of collagen.^TM

Acne scars with a pitted appearance are the result of loss of support structures under the skin, such as fat or muscle. The scar "sinks" into the depressed area. Some acne scars appear as skin discolorations from damage to tissue.^TM

The science behind what we see!^TM
In the Oct/Nov 2007 issue of Modern Bride Magazine, Beauty Director, Mary Clark underwent microdermabrasion treatments by NYC Dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD. Dr. Wechsler explained that the pores of the skin are cone-shaped, and exfoliation removes the surface layer which is the widest area of the pore, over time the pore appears smaller.^TM

How does EpidermxII work?^TM
Epidermx II^TM removes the top layers of dead skin, which helps to flatten and fade scar tissue into the normal skin tone. For the face, Epidermx II^TM removes dead surface skin, debris from daily environmental pollution and make-up, and debris that can be laden with bacteria, and clog pores. Powders, including the popular mineral make-up bases, can also deposit in the pores of the skin where they combine with dirt and sebum. This debris can become impacted in the pore. Impacted debris that remains in the pores of the skin can become congested, and infected, resulting in poor skin health and acne. Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives present in all living organisms either as preformed vitamin A or as carotenoids. Vitamin A (Retinol) is the prototype of all other retinoids and is necessary for proper growth, bone development, and integrity of mucosal and epithelial surfaces. Since then, vitamin A and its derivatives have been useful in the treatment of many skin disorders, including ichthyosis, acne, and psoriasis. Vitamin A and its derivatives have 2 main functions: they act as antioxidants, and they activate specific genes and proteins. Vitamin A also exerts a hormone-like effect on the skin, activating specific genes through nuclear receptors. Histologically vitamin A and its derivatives induce epidermal thickening, increase mitoses, differentiate keratinocytes, and reduce the number of sebocytes. The dermis shows increased amounts of glycosaminoglycans (GAG's) and anchoring fibrils. What are Silicones?^TM
The skin is a living organ. Some of its functions include protection, sensation, fluid regulation, and the elimination of wastes and toxins. Most skin care products contain silicone-bases. Silicones are plastic-based polymers used as emollients and thickeners. There are hundreds: Dimethicone, Carbomer and Simethicone, to name a few. Upon initial appearance, the skin looks smooth as the plastic-based polymers fill in the gaps of minor skin imperfections. Health Canada (Ministry of Health, Canada) lists silicones and siloxanes on their March 2007 Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist. Companies selling products with these ingredients must submit skin sensitivity testing and meet data requirements 90 days pre-sale.^TM

Other common skin care compounds can be combined with silicones. Carbomer, a common thickener, is also a trademarked name for a synthetic polymer of acrylic acid. Acrylic Acid is produced from propene and is a petro-chemical by-product. Acrylic Acid is a severe skin irritant and is corrosive. PEG derivatives are polymers of ethylene glycol, related to propylene glycol, or anti-freeze. Propylene, also called propene, is a petrochemical by-product; the main hazards involve respiratory symptoms. Propylene is an asphyxiant.^TM

Silicones, being plastic by nature, may act like a plastic bag. If nutrient absorption is decreased, and skin health is affected, the ability of the skin to function as an organ, may also be affected. To the touch, the skin feels hydrated, but may be de-hydrated. One function of the skin, is "to breathe", or allow the exchange of gases. If the skin can no longer breathe, it may be unable to eliminate cellular wastes and toxins. Toxins could then be re-absorbed. This toxic build-up could increase stress, which can cause cellular inflammation and cell damage. Cells can become congested, dehydrated and bloated with waste, which can stagnate. Cellular function may become impaired, and begin to fail, which can create changes in blood vessels, and in the lipid or fat matrix of the skin, which support skin tissues, and as a result, supporting skin tissues can collapse.^TM

Skin health is influenced by the acid mantle, which acts as a natural protective barrier. The acid mantle neutralizes the chemical effects from bacteria and contaminants that are mainly alkaline in nature. Most cleansers are alkaline, and require the use of a toner to correct the pH of the skin.
