DeLand's Card Cremation Trick-Later edition from 1950s-v.FINE----

(No Reserve-Bid & Item Will Sell.)

ITEM:  DeLand's Card Cremation Trick, in original envelope, instructions, gimmicked card and 6 newspaper sheets printed for this effect.  The newspaper sheets are printed on both sides to simulate an actual sheet of newsprint.  The King of Clubs is printed in color on one side of the paper.  A card is freely chosen, "THE KING OF CLUBS".  It is wrapped in a sheet of newspaper, and can be seen in the sheet, as it is folded up around the card.  The paper is burnt and the ashes scattered into a bowl of confetti.  The confetti is poured into an empty glass, then some poured out.  Glass is held in your hand.  They can see the confetti on the lower half of the glass, and your hand in the upper half.   (This is done using the back of the gimmicked card that has colored confetti printed on the lower half and a photo of your fingers on the top half.)  Glass is covered with a handkerchief, and the card that was burnt in the fire is now seen to be in the glass.  This was an effect put out by DeLand circa 1910.  This copy is a later edition put out using a newspaper sheet from The Kansas City Times, dated Jan. 30. 1959.  No makers name and not by S.S.Adams, who had purchased the manufacturing rights to all of DeLand's effects in 1919.  Richard Kaufman, who is writing the book on DeLand, said that Adam's never put this trick out and that this is a counterfeit DeLand's product.  If anyone knows who put this on the market, please email me so I can add that information to this ebay posting.  The newspaper fake is from The Kansas City Times, published in Kansas City, Missouri.  It is possible that a magic dealer in that city put this out, but never put his name on the product.

From Magicpedia, courtesy of Genii Magazine:

Theodore DeLand (1873-1931) created the phenomenon of packet tricks between 1906 and 1915, during which time he marketed almost 100 tricks using gimmicked cards and decks, many of his own unique creation.   DeLand was a clerk at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia and died in an insane asylum in Norristown, Pennsylvania. DeLand's tricks involved some of the following principles:

  • Double-faced Cards
  • Double-backed Cards
  • Double-ended cards
  • Specially Marked Cards
  • Printed Fans

In 1911, the Mysto Magic Company purchased the manufacturing rights to DeLand's creations. In 1918, S. S. Adams purchased the manufacturing rights to DeLand's creations.

A few of his marketed effects are:

  • Phantom Cards - 1907
  • X-Ray Deck - 1907
  • The Devil's Own Trick (1907)
  • Knock Out - 1908
  • Pickitout - 1908
  • Fadeaway Card - 1908
  • Papel Blanco - 1908
  • Nox-em-all - 1908
  • Wonder Change - 1909
  • Sphinx Card Trick - 1909
  • Two Card Monte - c. 1910
  • Million Dollar Mystery - 1910
  • Fly-a-way - 1911
  • Dollar Deck (aka Deland's Automatic Playing Cards) - 1913 - a combination of the Marked Deck, Stacked Deck, and Stripped Deck
  • The Vanishing Card
  • The Magic Lead Pencil
  • The Great Nail Puzzle

Richard Kaufman has been writing a book on the life and creations of Theodore DeLand for the last dozen years. DeLand: Mystery and Madness will explain all of DeLand's card tricks and other creations, as well as revealing a wealth of new biographical material.
