We believe that good wood ship modelers are made; not born. And for this reason we prefer that you start with a relatively simple model that can be completed in a short time. Many modelers over-reach and start with models that are beyond their experience level. Models like our USS Constitution or USF Confederacy are magnificent but complex and require skills that can be quickly learned on a model kit like our longboat offered here.
But let's be clear ... the longboat is not a simplified child's kit. On the contrary, designed for adult modelers with its 20 pages of photos, detailed instructions, tiny scale dead-eyes, blocks, and perfectly proportioned basswood (not balsa) laser cut framing and planking you will be building a real longboat...only in miniature. And you'll not do it overnight. Expect to spend about 30 hours and more to get it right. This is serious modeling for serious modelers and a big step forward after plastic kit modeling. By the way, there are no plastic parts in our kits ... ever.
You will need some simple tools: a hobby knife, sandpaper, tweezers, small files and small pliers. You probably have them at home.

18th CENTURY 26 FT. LONGBOAT
The longboat was the largest boat aboard an 18th century ship. The ship’s principal lifeboat, it was also used for coming and going to the ship to transport supplies and take empty water casks ashore to be filled with fresh water.
Longboats were kept fully provisioned at all times in case of an emergency. Longboats were carvel built with the planks meeting flush at the seams rather than overlapping. A full bow, high sides and fine aft lines made it fairly seaworthy in heavy winds and steep waves. The interior was fitted with thwarts to accommodate eight to ten oarsmen. Many longboats were equipped with a removable mast and sails to allow for more extended voyages. A ship’s gun could also be mounted in the bow.
Designed by master ship modeler Chuck Passaro, our longboat is a true plank-on-frame model, built much like the real longboats of the 18th century. The kit uses the finest laser cut basswood for false keel, ribs, locker, floorboards and thwarts. Other materials include brass strips, belaying pins, eyebolts and nails, wooden blocks and deadeyes, black and tan rigging line plus cast metal anchor. Pre-printed side friezes and stern decorations are included as well.
