A nicely illustrated description of this part of Italy not long after the end of the Second World War.

The west coast of Italy, from Genoa to Naples, washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, abounds in history, romance and beauty. Eric Whelpton has admirably captured this romantic atmosphere and has painted an excellent pen-picture of its luxuriant beauty, combined with history and legend.

We read of Genoa, home of the great merchant adventurers of mediaeval days; the glorious bay of Rapallo containing unsurpassable Portofino; of the renowned marble quarries of Carrara; of Viareggio, scene of Shelley's death and strange ritual cremation; of the fascinating island of Elba; of Anzio—scene of the famous Allied landing in 1944, and other well-known places.

It is, however, in descriptions of lesser-known places that so much of the charm of this book lies. The story winds its way by sandy beaches, castellated promontories stretching out into brilliant seas, through groves of orange and lemon and a wealth of floral beauty.
