HISTORY OF MY LIFE, by Giacomo Casanova, Chevalier de Seingalt, Volumes 1 and 2 bound together. First Translated into English in Accordance with the Original French Manuscript by Willard R. Trask, with an Introduction by the Translator, published by Helen and Kurt Wolf in cooperation with Harcourt & Brace, New York, 1966. "First Edition" is stated on the copyright page.

Original slip case (very little wear), hard boards, maroon cloth, gold facsimile signature of Casanova on the front board, 5.1/3" x 8.1/4"; vi + 349 + vi + 330 pages and 32 full pages plates on glossy paper; very fine pages and condition.

The English translation of the original French text- for Casanova the Venetian wrote his Memoirs in French- has been entrusted to Willard Trask, a translator whose scholarly and linguistic proficiency admirably equips him for this task. Copious notes elucidate the social, biographical, and geographical background. The original 12 volumes will be published in 6 double volumes, of which this is the first." (actually only 3 double volumes of this expensive hard cover edition were issued : 1967- 3&4; 1968- 5&6). "

Book Print Terminology

EDITION:

1. The published form of a literary work.

2. The number of copies, as of a book or newspaper, printed at one time or at several times from plates substantially UNALTERED.

Only the print from the SUBSTANTIALLY ALTERED PLATES indicates a new edition.

PRINTING:

One run during the production of a book. In many cases single prints are indicated by the date of printing on the title page. The modern books have a bar-code on the copyright page indicating the printing ("1" is present in bar-code) or "A" or stated "first printing").

For example all later printings of a First Edition are still a "First Edition".

STATE:

Small changes in the plates, like correcting the errors, broken types or taking out an illustration during the printing process, result in small differences. Different states can be still parts of one printing. Normally the early states have a very high catalog value.

ISSUE:

The amount of produced books, or newspaper, etc. during one edition or printing.
