Product Description:

The year is 1849. It’s the height of the California Gold Rush, and you can smell fortune in the air… along with gunpowder, of course.

In Fool’s Gold, players are rival investors in search of one thing: gold. As your prospectors explore the rivers and mines of the California frontier, they will discover rich veins of gold to plunder, and priceless jewels to pad your ever-expanding bank account. But it isn’t as easy as it seems: the elements, your other investors, and the ever-present possibility of finding fool’s gold can have you throwing all your money down a mineshaft.

Short of actually wandering through the mountains with a pickaxe, Fool’s Gold is the closest you will ever come to prospecting for gold. A distinctive art style inspired by the American “wild west” pulls you into the experience, while its combination of collection and exploration make each game its own unique adventure.

How to Play:

Each player starts Fool’s Gold with six coins and 2-4 prospectors, depending on the number of players. The game lasts five years (i.e., rounds), and at the start of each year, each player receives an additional coin and an additional prospector, giving you both more to spend and more on which to spend. Each year consists of two phases: the prospecting phase and the mining phase. During the prospecting phase, the start player rolls ten dice, then places the dice on the mines of the same number, with 6s being placed in the central camp. Each mine has a path to it starting with the numbered die, then spaces numbered 0-6.

After placing dice on the mine paths, players take turns taking one of these actions:

  • Place a prospector on a mine path, paying the cost of the space you cover; whenever you pay coins, place them in front of your player screen.
  • Place a wild die on a mine path, paying 1 for each die already on the path.
  • Place a prospector in front of your screen to take back three coins.
  • Pass, place all of your remaining prospectors in reserve next to any mine or mines of your choice, then take back all coins and prospectors in front of your screen.
  • Once everyone has passed, the mining phase begins. Starting at mine #1, shuffle the mine deck, then draw a number of cards equal to the product of the number of prospectors and the number of dice at the mine. Foul weather forces fewer cards to be drawn, while false alarms might result in treasure being snatched away from everyone. Players then choose rewards from the mine in order of priority, which is determined by the number of prospectors each player has at a mine (include those in reserve) and their location on the path; players must re-determine priority after each action at a mine.

    The player actions are:

  • Take a gold card from the mine.
  • Take a gem card from the mine, but only if you don’t already have this gem.
  • Take two coins from the bank, which gives you additional funds for the rest of the game.
  • Lay down your prospector (removing it from priority) and wait for winter.
  • Once all standing miners have been removed, roll the winter die and draw that many cards for winter.

If any goods come up, those layabout prospectors finally get to profit; if not, tough cookies, sourdough! After five rounds, players compare their findings, losing points if they’ve failed to collect gold from each mine. In addition, each player must throw out all the gold from the mine where he found the most. Turns out it was so easy to find because it was fool’s gold! Players then sum their nuggets and score 1-15 points for their gem collection. Whoever has the highest score wins!

  • Grading System

Welcome to the Noble Knight Games eBay Store!

Please be sure to review the Grading System and the Shipping Information sections below before bidding, for a smooth transaction.

    Grading System

Please review the exact condition and any condition notes or incompleteness notes (next to the title and description above) for the exact condition of this item. All pictures are stock photos.

Our grading system is as follows:

SW Shrink Wrapped. Still in the original factory shrink wrap, with condition visible through shrink noted. For example, ‘SW (NM)’ means shrink wrapped in near-mint condition.

    MINT Perfect. Brand new.

NM Near Mint. Like new with only the slightest wear, many times indistinguishable from a Mint item. Close to perfect, very collectible. Board games in this condition may be played but show little to no wear.

EX Excellent. Lightly used, but almost like new. May show very small spine creases or slight corner wear. Absolutely no tears and no marks, a collectible condition.

VG Very Good. Used. May have medium sized creases, scuff marks, very small stain, etc. Complete and very useable.

FAIR Very well used, but complete and useable. May have flaws such as tears, pen marks or highlighting, large creases, stains, marks, a loose map, etc.

POOR Extremely well used and has major flaws, which may be too numerous to mention. Item is complete unless noted.

    • Boxed items are listed as ‘code/code’ where the first code represents the box, and the second code describes the contents. When only one condition is listed, then the box and contents are in the same condition. If a book is listed in the same fashion, the first code represents the cover, and the second code the interior.
    • A ‘+’ (plus) sign indicates that an item is close to the next highest condition. Example, EX+ is an item between Excellent and Near Mint condition. A ‘-’ (minus) sign indicates the opposite.
    • Major defects and/or missing components are noted separately.
    • Boardgame counters are punched, unless noted. Due to the nature of loose counters, if a game is unplayable we will send you the parts or it may be returned for a refund of the purchase price.
    • In most cases, boxed games and box sets do not come with dice.
    • The cardboard backing of miniature packs is not graded. If excessively worn, they will be marked as ‘card worn.’
    • Flat trays for SPI games are not graded, and have the usual problems. If excessively worn, they will be marked as ‘tray worn.’
    • Miniatures come unpainted and unassembled unless specifically noted.
