Предлагаемый вниманию читателей сборник научно-популярных статей о природе Москвы и Подмосковья, посвященный 800-летию столицы нашей Родины, составлен коллективом сотрудников Института географии Академии Наук СССР и привлеченными специалистами на основании собственных исследований и новейших материалов.
Природе Подмосковья в прошлом было посвящено немало работ, однако большинство из опубликованных книг сильно устарело, а многие из них сделались библиографической редкостью.
Все статьи сборника объединены общим планом, благодаря чему сборник составляет единое целое. Каждая из статей посвящена характеристике одного из элементов природы, но все эти элементы природы рассматриваются во взаимосвязи и в процессе исторического развития. Особенно подробно авторы останавливаются на вопросах эволюции природы за период существования города Москвы в связи с его развитием.

Сборник рассчитан на городского учителя, студента и читателя - не специалиста-географа, но достаточно подготовленного в области географии и естественных наук.
