Victor Victrola Phonograph Leather Brake Pad
& Governor Speed Control Repair Part
Other Kits and Parts Available - See My Other Listings

This Kit Includes: ONE 1/2" Piece of approx. 1/8" Diameter Leather Brake Pad Material
(Each 1/2" section is enough leather for at least two brakes or governor friction plate pads)

This leather is used for brake pads and governor friction plate pads on Victor Talking Machines and Victrolas. It is also used on phonographs made by Columbia, Edison, Silvertone, Brunswick, Aeolian Vocalion and many others. Other sellers are peddling thin leather belt strips and claiming that it can be used as brake pad leather. That is simply poor advice that comes from inexperience. There is, however, a right way to do the work. The leather that Victor used is just like the leather I am selling. It is a single length of core hide leather which is cut from the thickest section of cow hide.

Installation Hints: I assume that the purchaser understands how to install a new brake or friction pad and only offer the following as a reminder of how to carefully proceed with the work. In most early phonographs the pads are held captive in a fork-like feature that grips around the leather. Removing the old pad is simply a matter of carefully tearing/cutting away the old remnants. Installing the new pad requires great care because the forked opening must be slightly spread open in order to receive the new leather. Once in place, the fork is then very gently clamped tight using a pair of pliers. You need a very steady hand and a just a little patience. I cannot tell you how many brake and friction pad holders I have repaired in the past for folks who rushed and broke something. Take your time and make sure you use a steady, patient hand.

I have been collecting and servicing antique phonographs, radios, and other mechanical antiques for about 35 years. About 10 years ago I decided to operate my shop on a full time basis. I always guarantee my work because customers deserve such assurance. The quality of good work comes from the study of actual antique phonographs and historical documents. If you always look at history for help, you will always find the best possible answers for any problems you encounter.
