The Azzurri overcame a defiant France team after a penalty shoot-out in Berlin following the now-infamous sending off of Zinedine Zidane in extra-time for headbutting Italian defender Marco Materazzi. This patch was worn on all Italian home shirts up to and including the finals in South Africa in 2010
