Hiking is a widely popular pastime, good for the body and the soul. It gives us an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, be embraced by the breathtaking landscape of the countryside, and enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of nature. There are many unique hiking routes in Hong Kong, offering hikers a diverse range of green experiences. Hongkong Post has issued a “Hong Kong Hiking Trails Series” to enhance the public’s understanding of local hiking trails. This first issue of the Hong Kong Hiking Trails Series features the 70-kilometre Lantau Trail on Lantau Island. The trail, with its 12 sections running through the Lantau Country Parks, offers some of the best spots for admiring sunrises and cloudscapes.

Section 1 – Mui Wo to Nam Shan
The Lantau Trail begins at the Mui Wo Ferry Pier. After ascending the hill along the wide, meandering South Lantau Road, the section terminates at the barbecue site at the top of Nam Shan Au. The stamp shows a bird’s eye view of Mui Wo.

Section 2 – Nam Shan to Pak Kung Au
Situated on the grass of Sunset Peak and Yi Tung Shan, the Stone Chalets are famous tourist attractions. The stamp depicts the Stone Chalets surrounded by layers of clouds.

Section 3 – Pak Kung Au to Ngong Ping
The major scenic spot is Lantau Peak. The summit of Lantau Peak, at 934 metres, is the second highest peak in Hong Kong. The summit offers a panoramic view and is therefore an ideal spot for admiring the rising sun. The stamp shows the grandeur of the Lantau Peak sunrise.

Section 4 – Ngong Ping to Sham Wat Road
This section starts at an area of open grassland. At its northeast corner a colourful phoenix sculpture is erected. The knoll in the southwest overlooks the whole of Shek Pik Reservoir. The stamp shows the Wisdom Path, where 38 wooden columns inscribed with words display the full text of the Heart Sutra.

Section 5 – Sham Wat Road to Man Cheung Po
This section traverses Kwun Yam Shan (dubbed “Knee-cap Peak”), Keung Shan and Ling Wui Shan, and finishes at Man Cheung Po. The stamp features the unusually shaped “Knee-cap Peak”, which resembles a bent knee.

Section 6 – Man Cheung Po to Tai O
Looking down from the pavilion at the end of the section, one can see every bit of scenic Tai O, including the disused salt pans and stilted structures. The stamp captures the fishing village of Tai O at sunset.

Section 7 – Tai O to Kau Ling Chung
This section runs through Fan Kwai Tong, and leads the hiker from the coast to the hillside. Next to this part are the southwesternmost waters of Hong Kong. As the waters are close to the Pearl River Estuary, seawater and river water mix to give a muddy appearance. Pictured in the stamp is the Fan Lau Fort, a declared monument in Hong Kong.

Section 8 – Kau Ling Chung to Shek Pik
The Kau Ling Chung Campsite boasts a bay with beautiful sand, clear water and shady trees, making this an ideal site for camping. The stamp shows the Lantau South Obelisk, erected in 1902 for boundary delimitation, on the knoll east of the Kau Ling Chung Campsite.

Section 9 – Shek Pik to Shui Hau
The Shek Pik Reservoir has a platform attached to the dam to give visitors a better view of the scenery of the reservoir and Lantau Peak. The stamp depicts the Shek Pik Reservoir under a blue sky.

Section 10 – Shui Hau to Tung Chung Road
This section simply winds along the catchwater, offering spectacular views of Luk Keng Shan and Shui Hau Wan from different angles along the way. The stamp captures the tranquil beauty of Shui Hau Wan.

Section 11 – Tung Chung Road to Pui O
There is a three-kilometre catchwater in this section which collects water from ten streams in the area. The stamp illustrates one of these streams.

Section 12 – Pui O to Mui Wo
The route starts from South Lantau Road at Pui O. It then runs via Chi Ma Wan Road and the bank of the Pui O River, makes a detour around Shap Long Au and Pak Fu Tin Campsite, and terminates at Mui Wo Ferry Pier. The stamp features Pui O Beach with Sunset Peak and Lin Fa Shan in the background.

The “Hong Kong Hiking Trails Series No. 1: Lantau Trail” comprises 12 stamps in a denomination of $1.70, with both self-adhesive and gummed stamps available. The souvenir sheet showcases the extraordinary scenery of all 12 sections of the Lantau Trail, supplemented by an outline map of Lantau Island incorporating a route map of the Lantau Trail.
