This
is a large, beautiful, deep-ruffled, antique, peach opalescent carnival glass bowl with the interior pattern of Ski Star and an exterior pattern of Compass, made by
Dugan Glass, circa 1915.
Very Brief
Background on Dugan. Thomas
Dugan and his cousin Harry
Northwood started out as employees at the Hobbs-Brockunier firm in
Wheeling,
West Virginia. Eventually, Mr. Northwood would form the Northwood
Glass Company
of Wheeling, West Virginia and Mr. Dugan would form the Dugan Glass
Company
of Indiana, Pennsylvania. Both companies were kingpins of the
carnival
and opalescent glass market in the early 1900's and both would close their doors in the mid 1920s.
Condition.
This huge, deep-ruffled bowl is in excellent condition
with no chips, cracks, or restorations. The iridescence is second to none.
There are, as usual, some "straw
marks" (shearing tool marks from manufacturing) and some small internal air bubbles
(nonburst) commonly associated
with the hand manufacturing and finishing of older carnival and opalescent and other EAPG pressed glass.
No two pieces of old carnival and opalescent glass are exactly alike because of the hand manufacturing and finishing. Each piece is unique.
...An uber example of Thomas Dugan's (cousin of Harry C.
Northwood) fine craftsmanship.
...A real pretty find.
...Would
look
great alongside any Northwood, Dugan, Fenton, Millersburg,
Jefferson, Westmoreland, Imperial, or
other
antique glass from the makers of fine carnival and opalescent glass and EAPG.
