This sale is for a large size vintage hardback edition entitled “Boswell’s London Journal 1762-1763,” now first published from the original manuscript prepared for the press, with introduction and notes, by Frederick A. Pottle, Sterling Professor of English, Yale University, with 3 illustrations, including a frontispiece portrait of James Boswell by Sir Joshua Reynolds and endpaper maps of London at the time.

It was published by William Heinemann Ltd., of London, in October, 1951 and is the fifth impression of the 1950 FIRST BRITISH EDITION [in book form] prepared from the original manuscript.

In the 1920’s many of Boswell's private papers, including intimate journals for much of his life, were discovered and eventually passed to Yale University, who published these editions of Boswell’s journals.

Boswell is closely associated with Dr Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), who is listed with nearly three columns of references in the index.

The contents include:

·       Publishers’ Note

·       Introduction by Frederick A. Pottle

·       Text of Boswell’s London Journal 1762-1763

·       Appendices

o   Scheme of Living Written at the White Lion Inn, Water Lane, Fleet Street the Morning After My Arrival 1762 (How He Aimed to Support the Rank of Living as a Gentleman from an Allowance from His Father of £25 Every Six Weeks [£200 a Year])

o   Letter Dated 30 May 1763

·       … and there is a useful 28 page Index (Index is Two Columns Per Page)

The illustrations are:

·       Two Pages of the Manuscript Recording Boswell’s First Meeting with Johnson (tinted)

The book measures 9.3 inches x 6.5 inches x 1.5 inches and has 370 pages + illustrations.

The book is in good neat condition for its age, with wear/chips to the edge of the stained/faded original dust-jacket (not price-clipped), a previous owner’s inscription at the front, light foxing near the covers, a slight odour of tobacco when the book is opened, and no other ink or pencil markings in the book.  The binding is good with no loose or missing pages.
