Condition:

     The map is in excellent condition (i.e., strong and bright paper, clear image, original nice margins, vivid colors, no tear, no bend, never framed, and slight but even age toning). It was printed on high quality heavy wove paper with a blank verso. Issued with a centerfold, there is some very minor stain along the edge of margin, and a tiny corner wear at tips, as shown by the detailed photo. The title page shown is for your identification purpose only and is not included with the map.

Description:

      This beautiful and originally hand colored map of the State of Maine and part of Quebec [plate 11–12, with parts of New Hampshire, Vermont] was from Asher & Adams’ New Statistical and Topographical Atlas of the United States with maps showing dominion of Canada, Europe and the World published by Asher and Adams in 1872 with a copyright entry date of 1871 on the map.

      Based in New York, Asher & Adams was a very reputable map publisher in middle and later 19^th century. Maps from this current atlas are very unique in style of presentation in the history of cartography. Focused on topographic features and routes of transportation [particular railroads], together with its distinctive style of hand coloring, the very detailed map highlighted the prominence of navigable Rivers, Railways, Junction towns, and County seats and vividly showed the contemporary interests, and state of commercial development of the area depicted [of the 19^th century America].
