Love tokens were commonly romantic keepsakes, popular between the later part of the 1800s through the early part of the 1900s.
One or both sides of a coin were ground smooth, allowing the engraver to decorate the flat sides with initials, names, pictorial scenes, dates or tokens of love.
Often, the token was given to a sweetheart in times of war as a gesture of remembrance and love or to commemorate a birthday, anniversary or death.
{ ABOUT THE CHARM }
Made from a Seated Liberty dime, the front of this love token is hand-engraved WR or RW in decorative lettering with added flourishes and a flower. A hole has been drilled on the bottom for a jump ring.
AGE: 1887
METAL: Coin silver
CONDITION: In nice, vintage condition. Could use a cleaning.
HALLMARK: None except the back of the coin
SIZE: 11/16" in diameter. Coin in the last photo is to help show scale.
WEIGHT: 2.1 grams
