This is a very unusual vintage earthenware (clay) tin glazed vase/pot of facial form in the cubist manner very much after or in the style of Picasso. The pot has been entirely hand thrown and worked with areas of strokes with a tool, there are indents from fingers and thumbs and although having a misshapen form, appears to be completely deliberate with regards its shape. The piece has been glazed internally and externally with hand painted decoration of a cubist face with red lips, eyes and lashes, shaped nose and numerous paisley type brush strokes around the rim and side/rear of head. The use of colour is pretty minimal with red, yellow and brown being used with a slightly pink tinted glaze. The base of the pot is unglazed and there appears to have been a signature or mark in black of some kind which has almost disappeared. The decoration is quite proficient and does look very interesting and typical of a cubist face. No chips, cracks or restoration. The interior is stained with some green residue to the bottom. I have no idea whom made this but as far as its history, it was purchased in the south of france many some time ago. This does not look as if it were made yesterday and the piece does seem to have some age. Interesting but also very decorative. Stands 6 inches high with an approximate diameter of 5 inch at widest point and a base diameter of 3 inches.
