Condition:
The
overall condition of this map is very good (i.e., clear and clean image, strong
and bright paper, nice margins, no bend, no tear, and slight but even age
toning – likely one of the nicest condition you will ever encounter for this
map). Issued with a centerfold, ample photos [details and the
watermark] in high resolution are presented for your convenience of
identification and judging its high quality independently.
Flaws to note: nearly flawless with no
apology.
Additional Notes:
This very nice
and important map of the Oxford Shire was published in 1722 in the English edition of Gibson edited Camden’s Britannia
[judging from its distinctive watermarks of a trodding horse in a circle as
shown]. It has a quite decorative cartouche. Robert Morden’s British County
maps [from Britannia in particular] are unusual and quite significant for they
were the only large and detailed county maps of its period as noted by Tooley
[see cited reference below]. Several English editions [e.g., 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd editions in 1695, 1722, and 1753 respectively] of Camden’s Britannia were
published with some subtle reversions.
Please note the modest price
[e.g., trading at over $200 for the same item of lesser quality] with no
reserve for this highly displayable collector’s item (especially in such nice
condition). Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
It will be securely
