France-Merovingian Denier 511-58 EF40 ANACS Childebert I Frank Paris Unique. - The Kingdom of Frankia was established by Clovis I in 496. Upon his death in 511 the kingdom was divided up among his four sons. Childebert I was the third son and became King of Paris. Coins of Childebert are extremely rare and extremely difficult to find for sale. When they are found they’re either the Byzantine style gold tremessis or the bronze nummus which are the two types listed in Medieval European Coinage vol. 1. However a brief mention is made of silver coins in the first volume of Traite de Numismatique du Moyen Age p.59 by Arthur Engel and Raymond Serrure published in 1894. The authors state that someone is in possession of a fragment of a coin that matches the one we’re offering up for sale. A fragment! Roberts also mentions that small silver coins were made during this time period but that most only exist as unique specimens. This was an amazing find and we were not only shocked when we attributed it but also when the experts at ANACS agreed with us.
