SEE PHOTO----- COMPLETE, ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER, the National Intelligencer (Washington DC) dated August 2, 1814 with FRONT-PAGE report of the American burning of the Canadian town of St. David's, present day NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, near Niagara Falls, Canada and the city of BUFFALO, New York! The town was a strategic hotspot as it sits at the mouth of Niagara River in CANADA, right across from Fort Niagara, on the American side of the river. The burning of St. David's was a prelude to the 2nd Battle of Chippawa and the Battle of Lundy's Lane, engagements which showed the British that the American Army was a formidle force. Also on the front page is a long, detailed 1st-hand account of the British CAPTURE OF EASTPORT MAINE and Fort Sullivan.

DISPLAYABLE 1814 newspaper with front page 1st account of the BURING OF ST. DAVID'S and the CAPTURE OF EASTPORT, MAINE during the WAR OF 1812, near Niagara Falls! This newspaper is a fantastic piece of WAR of 1812 history!!

The Burning of St. David's was an action taken by a battalion of New York militia that encountered unexpectedly fierce resistance from residents of a village close to Queenston Heights, where Major General Jacob Brown wanted to occupy a position following the Battle of Chippawa. Brown dismissed the American commander who ordered the action.

In 1809, Fort Sullivan was erected near Eastport atop a village hill, but it was captured by a British fleet under command of Sir Thomas Hardy on July 11, 1814, during the War of 1812 as part of the initiative to establish the colony of New Ireland. Btitaim claimed that Moose Island was on the British side of the international border which had been determined in 1783. Nevertheless, the town was returned to US control in 1818. The boundary between the US and Canada in the area remained disputed until it was settled by the Webster–Ashburton Treaty of 1842.
