This is a rare ancient Roman jasper glass intaglio, dating to the 1st - 2nd century AD. The intaglio depicts Leda being ravished by Zeus in the guise of a swan. The gem displays Leda reclining on a couch, in profile to the right. Leaning on her right elbow. She is naked, and with her left arm she embraces the swan, which stands between her legs with wings outspread. For an ancient impressed glass example, it bears good sculptural detail, though partly worn on the surfaces. during the late Roman Republican period, there was a vogue for glass intaglios, especially of early Greek pieces and famous artists. This piece was likely made in Egypt for the Roman market, being masters of glass-making during this period. the gem appears to have a crack or damage, the black wavy line is ancient and made during its birth - from hot molten glass. It is perfectly stable and has earthy deposits from its excavation. Original ancient Roman Leda's are rare in any grade, this is a particularly nice example.
