This is an ancient Roman carnelian intaglio, dating to the 2nd century A.D. It is finely cut with a delightful scene of Cupid (Eros) mischievously attempting to trap a goose ( the sacred bird of his mother Venus). This alludes to the pursuit of love, attempting to catch a difficult or challenging conquest! Sadly there is a chip to Cupid's wing, otherwise it is in good excavated condition. Originally this gem would have been set within a gold or silver signet ring, used to seal and authenticate documents. Today this intaglio is suitable for remounting into a gold finger ring or added to your collection.
