• The Man from Interpol – Tony Crombie

Extended remastered re-release.

There's no question, listening to this music, that the producers of The Man from Interpol series were trying for the same kind of appeal that Henry Mancini's music had generated for Peter Gunn on American television -- hence their choice of self-taught jazz drummer and pianist Tony Crombie (1925-2001) as composer, arranger, and leader in the recordings for the music from the series.

The music isn't bad programmatic jazz, a bit old-fashioned on the big-band side of things, and sometimes rather generic, but always exciting and diverting, if lacking the subtleties (and bluesier) moments of Mancini's work on the Blake Edwards-produced Peter Gunn.

Interestingly, the music here -- and one heartily wishes that there were credits for who is playing -- was effective enough so that when The Avengers went on the air in 1960, its producers opted for a similar jazz-inspired score and theme material, courtesy of Johnny Dankworth, with whom Crombie had worked in previous years.

The sound is excellent and some of the playing is superb -- this is not the kind of tired work that one heard in routine "trad jazz" sides of the period, and one does wish to know the name of the trumpet man blowing up a storm of "Motor Museum" here, or the vibraphonist on "Big Ben Bounce."

Rock fans in general and Who fans in particular may also want to note the third from the last track here, "Eastern Journey," which the Who cribbed note for note and tarted up as "Cobwebs and Strange," credited to Keith Moon, on the Happy Jack album -- this original explains a lot.

• Elizabeth Taylor in London / Sophia Loren in Rome – John Barry

The success of ELIZABETH TAYLOR IN LONDON prompted D’Antoni and Baer to develop a follow-up special to be broadcast the following year.  1964’s SOPHIA LOREN IN ROME would follow the same format, with the Italian star serving as tour guide to her own country’s capitol.

As with ELIZABETH TAYLOR IN LONDON, Barry composed a main theme for the star (“Sophia”), giving it an authentic Italian flavoring through the dominant use of mandolin and accordion; but the score’s primary theme remains “Secrets of Rome,” which holds in its captivating melody a sense of wonder and grandeur for the Italian city and its rich history.

Both of these soundtracks are now available for the first time ever together on one CD. A resounding “must” for all John Barry collectors AND fans of both Elizabeth and Sophia!

West-coast drummer meets East Coast hustlers!

Chico Hamilton is still beating the skins, and we present here two memorable collaborations which celebrate his special - and in our view - underrated talent for film music. First up is for Roman Polanski's first English-language movie, the dark thriller "Repulsion" which starred Catherine Deneuve. • Pope Joan – Maurice Jarre (premiere original recording)

The legend persists that in the 9th Century a woman sat on Throne of Rome.

The legend has been told many times, and this dramatization from director Michael Anderson vividly conveys the superstitions that prevailed at that time.

Bringing the film to life is Maurice Jarre’s magisterial score released here for the first time in a superbly produced booklet that traces the history of this remarkable tale.  It is released by us exclusively for the very first time. With a fine essay by noted film music journalist Randall D. Larson, and an appreciation of his friend, Maurice Jarre by James Fitzpatrick, this is a fitting tribute to the late composer.

Packed with magnificent photographs from on and off the set, this Collectors’ Edition is one to own.

• The Trouble with Angels – Jerry Goldsmith

Jerry Goldsmith must have really enjoyed himself on this assignment!  Centering on a girls’ convent school, and starring Rosalind Russell, it featured Hayley Mills (she was the Emma Watson of her day!).

The movie is still a hugely entertaining watch today, made even more pleasurable by Mr. Goldsmith’s fascinating and immensely creative score.

Darren Allison has written some perceptive and helpful notes which also include some rare on (and off) the set stills in the 12 page booklet which also has a full Japanese translation.
