This is a beautiful
VICTORIAN ANTIQUE
GOLD PLATED
LORGNETTE
In my estimation it dates from around the mid 19th Century, circa 1870-1880, but please make up your own mind about this.
The lorgnette measures approx 5 1/2 inches (140mm) long by 3 1/2 inch (90mm) tall, when open; 4 inches (100mm) long when closed up.
It is made to a beautiful design, with exquisite engraved decoration on the handle, (see photographs).
The mechanism works as it should and the lenses spring smartly into place when the catch is released.
The catch has a two position action; first, to unlock the lenses, slide the catch away from the lenses. The lenses move apart a couple of millimeters.
Then, to open them fully, move the catch back towards the lenses. The lenses spring open.
The springs are good, and the lorgnette opens with a powerful action, and stays open with no wobbles or issues.
It is in very good, antique condition with very light wear consistent with its great age, but no damage or repairs.
