RBT S1 (Konica Hexar) Stereo Film Camera

DrT's All Time Favorite Film Stereo Camera

Summary:

I have been a happy owner of an RBT S1 since 1998 and have taken thousands of rolls through my camera with excellent results.  For example in the 2004 Olympics in Athens Greece, I shot 100 rolls of slide film with my RBT S1 camera (and presented a show at the NSA Convention in 2005).  In 2009 (my last big film vacation) I shot 30 rolls in a 5 week vacation in Orlando FL, and many of these pictures won awards in the Cleveland and Detroit stereo club where I finished in first place (in both clubs) in 2009-2010. I am often being complimented for my stereo slides when projected in our local stereo club.  People always comment on how sharp they are. I am trying to convince them that it is not the camera but the photographer... but I don't have much luck.

Why do I like this camera:

If I had to summarize what I like about this camera, it would be the following:

1) Compact, easy to carry. Quiet.

2) Easy to use, just turn on and press the button. The camera will focus, adjust exposure, fire.

3) The lenses are super sharp (read below).

4) The exposure system works perfectly.

5) This camera has given me the highest ratio of "keepers".  I rarely throw away a picture taken with this camera.  Even if the subject is not very interesting, the exposure, sharpness, etc, are all perfect so I hate to discard the picture.

6) The smaller lens spacing (59mm) and autofocus makes this camera perfect for close ups.

7) The compact size, reliable autofocus and exposure, and lack of slapping mirrors, make this camera perfect for hand-held available-light photography, and this is exactly the type of photography I enjoy.  I have no problem using the camera even at f2.0.

I have used dozen of stereo and 2d cameras. I generally thing that most cameras give similar results under normal stereo shooting conditions (handheld, small apertures, etc).  This is the first camera where I have seen something different, something better in the pictures.  I don't know how to express this.  The pictures appear to be "smoother" and "sweeter" and not chocked in high contrast (common with other lenses).

They say that the design of these lenses is similar to a Leica Summicron 35mm f2.0.  These lenses sell (used) for about $1200 each.  The comment has been made that you can buy a Konica Hexar 2D camera for much lens than the price of a Summicron lens, so the camera is a bargain in this respect.

This camera was given to me to sell by a stereo enthusiast who has switched exclusively to digital. I have switched to digital myself too but I will never sell my RBT S1. If I ever shoot a roll of 3d film again, it will definitely come from my RBT S1.
