This is a fabulous ancient Egyptian gold and carnelian finger ring, dating to the 18th dynasty (c. 1543-1292 B.C.). It has the classic elongated gold band, tapering to thin wires (that are threaded through the carnelian and) wrapped around the shoulders. The carnelian gem is cut to resemble a leaping frog. The frog was sacred to Heqet an Egyptian goddess of fertility, identified with Hathor, represented in the form of a frog. To the Egyptians, the frog was an ancient symbol of fertility, related to the annual flooding of the Nile. Rings with frog figures were worn by women, particularly during the New Kingdom. This is a lovely example, with a nicely sculpted frog. Today this ring can be worn with care and consideration for its great age.
