Hello, and thank you for viewing this used Nippon Kogaku Reflex-NIKKOR 50cm/500mm f/5 Pre-Ai Telephoto Lens likely manufactured in 1963 (based on serial number). This lens is in excellent optical condition. Designed for use with Nikon’s Photomic viewfinders, this Reflex-NIKKOR has an unusually fast aperture for a mirror lens. What is offered here is the full kit as produced in 1963 which includes the full complement of five (5) 39mm rear screw-in filters that store inside the top cover of the leather lens case. The front and rear elements are smooth and free from blemishes in glass. The coating shows minor negligible marks. Looking at the front element shows unusual ring marks in the glue that cements the internal rear-facing mirror. Though this appears unusual it has no effect on image quality. Cosmetically clean, this lens shows a few light marks from normal use but no abuse or damage. The focus ring operates smoothly and the griping surface is in excellent condition. Being of reflex design the Reflex-NIKKOR has no diaphragm but is a ‘fixed’ f/5 aperture. Exposure is controlled using shutter speed, ISO and, when necessary, 39mm rear mount screw-in 4X ND (2 f/stop neutral density) filter.

The filters are in excellent condition for the most part. The Y52 Yellow filter has a small flake chipped from the edge near the mount ring. This chip is outside the imaging area and will not affect image quality when used. The filters are contained in the original plastic bags marked Nippon Kogaku and are stored inside the top cap of the case held secure by leather straps secured by snaps. The L39, which is a skylight filter, is attached at the rear lens element. Focusing is accomplished using a focus ring, not by rotating the main lens barrel, as is the case with most reflex lenses.
Often called a "poor man's telephoto lens”, reflex lens design folds the light path by the use of internal mirrored surfaces. This produces a significant reduction in size and weight compared to conventional lenses of equivalent focal length. An additional benefit of reflex lens design is the virtual elimination of chromatic aberration (color fringing along boundaries separating light and dark areas of the image). This provides images with superior apparent sharpness. A characteristic of reflex design is the elimination of the focus shift when shooting in the infrared spectrum. With the reflex design all colors focus at the same point, including infrared, so there is no need to change focus as required by normal lens design.
This lens is compatible with all Nikon 35mm SLR cameras. It will mount on ALL Nikon film and digital SLR bodies but will not support meter function on DSLRs requiring AF-S lenses. Check your camera’s lens requirements BEFORE bidding on this lens. Of course the Reflex-NIKKOR 50cm f/5 will work on any camera, film or digital, with the appropriate lens mount adapter. You can hang your Micro 4/3 or mirrorless body on it and get up to 1000mm equivalent focal length at f/8 and shoot the moon and stars if you want too. Any way you look at it, it’s small, light-weight and gives you a LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG reach!!!
Please Note! Meter function is not supported on Nikon DSLRs that require Nikon's AF-S lenses. This lens will mount on these cameras but is limited to manual focus only. Please check for compatibility BEFORE BIDDING!
