This is an ancient Roman silver intaglio ring, dating to the 3rd century A.D. The ring retains the original carnelian gem intaglio, tightly set in a rubbed over mount. It is cut with a cuirassed bust, wearing a laurel wreath crown. The ring has been cleaned of heavy encrustation of calcium (see last two photographs), developed around the ring during burial. This would imply the ring was deposited into a damp cave or catacomb where it has rested for nearly two thousand years. It is an interesting piece of early jewelry of great age and presence, still suitable to be worn again with care.
