This is a rare Romano-Egyptian Gnostic Magical finger ring, dating to the 2nd century A.D. The ring certainly shows its great age, enough detail is still present to allow for a firm dating and typology from the 'Campbell Bonner Magical Gems Database'. The first clue is the lapis-lazuli material of the gem, the shape being rectangular. The ring is large and designed to display the gem, though not the magical spell that is certainly written behind (as seen on other gems of the genre. This example is still retained in the iron ring and has not been removed).

This type of magical gem is known as a 'Pantheos' who is standing on 'Ouroboros', enclosing animals. The Pantheos on this example is wearing a kilt similar to Abraxas, though he appears to have cloven feet rather than snakes for legs. As a Pantheos it would be a mixture of animals/attributes given to it for protection. The Ouroboros symbolic of eternity certainly has protected this ring for eons.

It would be possible to safely remove the intaglio with care, thus being the first person in two thousand years to view the magical spell written in behind. I have not attempted to remove the gem, this mystery makes the piece all the more special!
