About Novaculite:

Novaculite is a highly siliceous form of chert rock or flint known to be highly resistant to erosion. Its name comes from the Latin term “novacula”, which means “razor stone”.

Otherwise known as Arkansas Oil Stones, Novaculite stones are known to be the best type of stone, natural or synthetic, for providing a smooth, sharp, polished blade. Novaculite has been used to sharpen blades for centuries, starting with the Native Americans’ use of the stone to make arrowheads. "Modern" manufacturing of sharpening stones made of Novaculite began in the 1800's.

The Hot Springs area of Arkansas is the only known source for 99+% pure silica Novaculite. All grades, soft, hard, surgical black or translucent of Novaculite will polish as they sharpen, thereby eliminating the need for stropping or polishing. When sharpening with an Arkansas Stone, less metal is removed and the edge will not have micro-serrations thereby increasing durability of both the blade and the edge.

If a blade is in reasonable condition and there is an existing edge, the sharpening process can start with the Soft Arkansas medium in hardness and grit. The Soft Arkansas is typically followed by harder stones to further refine the edge. Hard Arkansas, Surgical Black Arkansas and Translucent Arkansas, in order of hardness are used to achieve the desired sharpness and polish. The rare Translucent Arkansas stone can produce different results depending on the amount of pressure applied while sharpening and can eliminate the need for Arkansas Hard stones in the process.

Properly maintained, with use of our recommended honing oil, Arkansas Oil Stones will last a lifetime. They are extremely resistant to "dishing" or "hollowing”, so lapping or flattening of our stones should not be necessary.
