A Monumental Gothic Walnut Astronomical Regulator, New York, probably Meeks or Contemporary, c.1840-1850

More Photos & Description The Stanley Weiss Collection More Photos & Description

This monumental regulator stands over 9 ½ ft tall and was deaccessioned from the Fraunces Tavern Museum in Manahattan (near Wall St.). For an image of this clock in relation to other furniture, see below. This regulator retains all its original parts including finials, mercury pendulum, et al. The face is the original silvering, and the works, have been cleaned (by Robert Cheney, foremost clock expert) and are functioning beautifully.

Although the works are not signed, Robert Cheney feels this is clearly an American piece, and we feel, based upon our furniture experience, is New York, and further, the superior craftsmanship indicates one of the major shops of that time, like Meeks, & Co. Gothic Furniture has become very desirable and a clock of this stature is truly monumental…and as an astronomical regulator, is a rarity and treasure. Most regulators have very plain cases. (see detail). Our clock has it all: looks, function, and stature.

Height: 117 in. (9 ft. 9 in.) Width: 25 1/2 in. Depth: 11 1/2 in.
