Locality
Information about crystals/mineral specimens from this location

This is an eye-catching specimen of gemmy DATOLITE - CaBSiO4 (OH) from the Roncari Quarry in East Granby, CT. I collected this specimen back in the early 1990s, then sold it to noted New England mineral collector Frank J. Murphy. It came back to me at an auction of material from his collection in 2013.

Mineralogy
Facts about gems, rocks and minerals

The Datolite Group which is also known as the datolite/gadolinite Group after its two most common members is composed of similarly structured nesosilicates. Its members contain alternating borate tetrahedrons, B(O, OH)4, and silicate tetrahedrons, SiO4, that are connected to each other in a sheet like structure. Between the tetrahedral sheets and linking the tetrahedral sheets are metal cations in 8 coordination. Despite the layered structure, cleavage is all but completely absent. Some members have beryllium instead of boron in the non-silicate tetrahedrons. Several members have rare earth metals as part of their compositions. The general formula for the Datolite Group is approximately: X(B, Be)SiO4(OH, O). The X ion can be either calcium, magnesium, cerium, lanthanum, iron, tin, niobium, yttrium, ytterbium and/or erbium.

Metaphysics
Information about crystal, gem and mineral metaphysics and healing

People interested in metaphysics and crystal healing tell us that datolite is used to increase stature and respect. It can help with problem solving, and with remembering significant details. It can also instill an understanding of transience in those experiencing change. Datolite can be used in treating diabetes and hypoglycemia, and is useful for enhancing memory.
