This book is the result of ten years of research, the early stages of which were used as the basis of the associated television series. The aim of Mears' and Hilman's project has been to throw some light on the British Mesolithic, when our own ancestors would have lived as hunter-gatherers.

"The real problem, ...of course, is that organic [archaeological] remains from the past survive so poorly. What we do have is lots of evidence of the use of stone tools..."

In an attempt to fill the gap, the authors scoured British and European archaeological literature for finds of botanical material, and researched the finer details of British botany. The most well-known part of their project, of course, were their expeditions to study existing hunter-gatherer communities, and their techniques of food gathering and processing. This book presents the authors' resulting understanding, applied in turn to each British species of plant which is known, or suspected, to have been used by Mesolithic Britons.

Practical and interesting, but also academically sound - "Most attractive ...lays down a research hypothesis of fabulous promise." British Archaeology magazine. Includes a good bibliography.

Chapters include: Britain's last hunter-gatherers; A foot in both worlds; Foraging; Hunting; Fungi; The plant foods of our hunter- gatherer ancestors; Bibliography.

US CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE! Airmail parcels entering the USA are inspected by HOMELAND SECURITY. This can include opening the mail sack. Parcels to US addresses can therefore be delayed and sometimes take up to four weeks. We must ask US customers to be very patient - we have now sent out many replacement parcels only to see the original arrive before the replacement. In our experience (30 years, tens of thousands of parcels), almost NO parcels are ever actually lost.

ALL CUSTOMERS, EVERYWHERE, please allow at least 14 days before contacting us to chase up your order.

(In the UK the Royal Mail will not declare a parcel lost & take action before 14 days has elapsed. Overseas, postal services vary in efficiency from country to country. The Irish and the Japanese post offices seem quite good, for example, the Germans less so, and South Africa the slowest by a long way.)
