Bobby Charles

Born Robert Charles Guidry on February 21, 1938, in Abbeville, he was reared by non-musical parents in the heart of the Acadian region. According to Charles, as a child he enjoyed listening to Cajun music on the radio, despite his limited knowledge of the Cajun French dialect.

As a recording artist and particularly as a songwriter, Bobby Charles exerted a profound influence on swamp pop, especially during its formative years. Al though best known for penning such memorable tunes as “Later Alligator,” “I Don’t Know Why I Love You but I Do” and “Walking to New Orleans:’ other, more locally popular songs like “On Bended Knee,” “Why Did You Leave:’ “Why Can t You,” and “Before I Grow Too Old inspired numerous south Louisiana imitators, who in turn expanded the swamp pop repertoire and impacted regional and national charts. Although Charles refuses to confine himself solely to writing swamp pop—styled music—and although he is sceptical about his role in swamp pop’s development—be nonetheless deserves credit for his contributions to the fledgling genre.
