This note has incredible color, boldly visible original embossing, and a tremendous amount of eye appeal. The $5 Porthole is almost self-explanatory. It was the last of the U.S. large-size five-dollar bills issued before the Treasury's conversation to small size notes. Since its inception, a controversy over the notes design has raged. With no apparent middle ground collectors either love or hate the note. Regardless of the opinions of collectors the notes historic value is immense being the first solo appearance of Lincoln on the five dollar note where he remains to this day. The porthole, that is, round portrait design was never used again since then giving way to a more oval framing of the personality illustrated. With this series, there is a single blue seal. The blue color for seals was utilized until the 1950s. The 1923 five dollar notes are actually the only large size $5 silver certificate printed during the 20th century. That means that this note is on a lot of want lists. Lincoln specialists collect them, as do five dollar bill collectors, silver certificate collectors, and type design collectors.
