In the late 1800's, George T. Morgan (designer of the Morgan Silver Dollar) proposed a design for the largest denomination United States coin: the 1876 $100 Union. The coin was never authorized to be minted. Sketches for the Union were recently re-discovered and are the basis for the design of this commemorative Proof Silver coin. It was struck in 2016 out of 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver. It weighs 31.1 grams and has a diameter of 38.1mm.
The reverse of this magnificent coin depicts a seated Lady Liberty. She holds an olive branch in her left hand and a scepter in the right, with ribbon wrapped stalks of wheat beside her. The background depicts a ship with mountains beyond. The image is bordered with thirteen stars and the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “1876”. The obverse features an eagle perched upon a shield holding three arrows and an olive branch. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” appear above.
Minted by The New York Mint with collectors in mind, this Gem Proof specimen is certified Ultra Cameo (UC) by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation), a highly respected coin authentication company. The Ultra Cameo designation refers to the high degree of contrast between the raised and flat surfaces. Proof blanks are specially treated and polished to ensure high-quality strikes.
