TAHITIAN CULTURED PEARL BACKGROUND INFO:
When a foreign object is introduced into the body of an oyster or mollusc, the organism produces a soft coating of calcium carbonate (nacre) around it, creating a pearl. The pearl cultivators/farmers insert a ball made out of the Mississippi mussel shell into the organisms to create cultured pearls.

TAHITIAN PEARLS have a unique dark colour. The colour range is enormous and caters to different tastes: nearly black, grey, green, brown, silver. All of these can have a secondary colour of pinkish, burgundy (peacock), honey, bluish! These colours cannot be controlled in the farming process.
The pearls, ranging mainly from 9 mm to 16 mm, with some larger pearls up to 18mm (extremely rare), are farmed on the volcanic atolls and reefs of Tahiti. They are mostly round or oval/drop in shape and have a rich, high lustre. Tahitian cultured pearls tend to cost more than other types of pearls based on their scarcity and unique look.

Not to be confused with FRESHWATER PEARLS which originate in the freshwater lakes and rivers of China. These range in size between 2 mm and 13 mm, are available in all shapes, have low to medium lustre and are treated-dyed into all colours according to fashion trends.
